The NATO bombing in Yugoslavia and the prospect of a larger-scale war in the Balkans held a prominent place in this year’s Tax Day actions.

From New Jersey to Oregon, from Kentucky to Minnesota, activists from war tax resistance organizations, WRL locals and other peace and justice groups protested war taxes April 15 with penny polls, street singing and street theater, picketing, vigils and leafleting, and a tag-team run and a bake sale. Thousands of dollars withheld from the Internal Revenue Service by war tax resisters were donated to community and human-needs organizations; tens of thousands of WRL’s “Where Your Income Tax Really Goes” pie-chart flyer were handed out. Many groups reported unusually positive reactions from passers-by, and penny poll results overwhelmingly showed once again that the people in this country would give far less money to the military than our elected representatives do. In response to a request from this magazine, the National War Tax Resistance Coordinating Committee put out a call for pictures of the day’s activities; here’s a small sample of the dozens that came in from all across the country.
