WRL NEWS
Locals, Contacts, Affiliates Who are they? What does it mean to be a WRL local, contact or affiliate? There are many ways you can be involved with WRL—joining our mailing list means that you receive this magazine and other mailings; using our materials in your organizing work; tried and true financial support; chatting us up with other people; writing in to our guest book online; speaking out wherever you are to promote the idea of the power of nonviolent resistance. Another way is through our Organizing Network, printed in every other issue of the Nonviolent Activist to facilitate involvement in the League—finding people to find people to get together to help us do the work of organizing to end war. Locals, contacts and affiliates are the three basic categories in the network. Locals: WRL local groups are made up of at least five people who have signed our Statement of Purpose (I believe all war to be a crime against humanity. I therefore am determined not to support any kind of war, international or civil, and to strive nonviolently to remove all causes of war.) These people have submitted a letter of application to the WRL Executive Committee outlining their interests and organizing plans, and have been approved as a local by that body. Contacts: If you are a lone WRL member in your area and want to be a kind of point person for us, or if your organizing is done with other groups but you identify with WRL politics, you may want to consider being a contact—someone to whom we can refer people in your area who are interested in learning more about WRL. Affiliates: If you are part of a group that is comprised of some people who agree with WRL politics and philosophy and some who don’t, then perhaps the affiliate route is the one for you. Affiliates are groups or organizations, not individuals, that may not be pacifist organizations themselves, but who have members who have signed the statement of purpose and who support our work overall. Our program for young people, ROOTS (Resistance Out Of Truth and Struggle), is another opportunity for involvement in WRL. These groups are comprised of young people who agree with our basic philosophy, who are willing to take an active part in the current anti-JROTC (Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps) and other ROOTS/WRL campaigns. We welcome your involvement at any level. Changing the world one heart and mind at a time takes one heart and mind at a time, which means we all try to work together. We’re always happy to discuss with you what might be the best way for you to connect with us; feel free to give the national office a call—or contact one of the people in the organizing network. We also have materials we can send you to help you with your organizing efforts; just contact the office. Most of our flyers are available for downloading from our website. Finally, we are trying to expand our e-mail capability. Would you like to be on a WRL listserv? It is a forum for information and discussion of issues and activities of interest to WRL and its members. Call or email WRL tofind out how to join. Speaking of general membership, do you remember when you signed our statement of purpose? In a future issue, we will talk about this more, but for now—do you have an interesting story to tell about why and how you became a WRL member? Whether it was when the U.S. entered WWII, or after the U.S. bombed Afghanistan, or somewhere in between, we’d love to hear about it. Please write or e-mail us at the addresses above. And stay tuned for one of those fun membership surveys, coming soon. Now that you know all about us, we want to know all about you! Thank you and if you have questions, please call, write, or e-mail us. —Melissa Jameson Director, WRL National Office |
