Dear ,
The government is being transformed on a daily basis, but not how we want it to be. On March 14th a Continuing Resolution passed the final budget for Fiscal Year 2025 - the fiscal year that began October 1, 2024. It gives Trump the ability to continue to decide where your tax money goes. While the government proclaims budget cuts, defense spending was increased by about $6 billion from the previous year, while there are $13 billion in cuts from nondefense spending and $20 billion in funding for the IRS.
Producing the WRL pie chart in time for tax day leafleting becomes a challenge each time there is a transition to a new administration. The budget is always late, and this year the Fiscal Year 2026 budget may not be out until May. On top of that, the whole budget process has descended into chaos over the last decade or so. WRL's FY2026 pie chart flyer takes some of the stated goals of the White House, Congressional Republicans, and DOGE exploits and makes an estimate for what the next year's budget might look like. As the administration talks about the cuts they want to make, the numbers are often projections over 10 years. Our estimated 2026 pie indicates what the first step for federal spending in transition might look like, with cuts to social programs that begin to shift the percentages to ever more military — and a significant amount of debt.
Let's be clear, it's nothing new for the military budget — actual spending — to increase. Democrats and Republicans alike are in the pockets of the military-industrial complex. The difference with this administration is that, in essence, they don't believe the government should fund social programs, so we can expect to see the percentages shift over four years, unless the outcry to cut the military and save people and the planet are loud enough!
We encourage you to get copies of Where Your Income Tax Money Really Goes to share with the increasing growing numbers of people protesting the cuts in human resources. For example 50501 has called for Nation-wide Protests and Sit-ins in all 50 states on April 5th.
We will send online orders upon receipt, they should reach you in 2-3 days. If it’s too late to order, you can print them by going to: warresisters.org/federalpiechart
