Activist Profile: Uruj Sheikh
Uruj Sheikh came on board as the Freeman Intern at the War Resisters League’s national office in January. Her term was originally set for three months, but she has been such a huge help that we begged her to stay longer!
Much of Uruj’s work has focused on WRL’s Listening Process, the new special issue of WIN Magazine, which features organizers from across the country assessing the antiwar movement. She transcribed many of the interviews, reviewed many more, helped select the content, and played key coordinating roles.
Uruj has also been instrumental in WRL’s growing GI resistance support work. She helped to form WRL’s new GI Resistance Support Committee, through which she supported Iraq Veterans Against the War at Winter Soldier: Iraq & Afghanistan as a member of their media team. And she has helped with outreach to soldiers at Ft. Dix. She plans to stay involved in this work after her Freeman Internship ends in August.
Uruj is currently taking a year off from school. She attended Pace University for two and a half years where she was studying sociology and English literature and culture. It was there where she organized with Students for a Democratic Society on free speech issues, democratizing the university, and work with the adjunct faculty union.
