Week of Action: Countering the Militarisation of Youth!

This week is the 2nd International Week of Action Against the Militarisation of Youth. Join the War Resisters International with nonviolent actions this week and stand against the many ways young people are engaged in wars all around the world!

Here is the list of events happening this week:

10th November: Subash Kattel from Nepal gives a talk on countering youth militarisation in Nepal in an event jointly organised by The Community Self Reliance Center and National Land Rights Forum in Kathmandu.

 

12th November: Al Scorch and the Country Soul Ensemble performs "Poverty Draft" in their show at the University of Wisconsin, USA.

13th November: German Peace Society - United War Resisters' (DFG-VK) Cologne organise a talk with COs from Israel in Cologne/Germany.

14th November: Conscientious Objection Association in Turkey organises a workshop on conscientious objection and youth resistance against war in Izmir/Turkey.

14th November: Cuerpo Con-Siente from Colombia will take non-violent direct actions in Bogota/Colombia.

14th-15th November: A group of activist in Bolivia will organise events on youth militarisation and conscientious objection, happening the same time with the 'Armed Forces Week' in the country.

14th – 20th November: The National Network Opposing the Militarization of Youth (NNOMY) convenes A National Call: Save Our Civilian Public Education, a call to action to demilitarize schools in the USA.

16th November: The meeting Ban Schoolyard Recruitment is organised by the United Nations Association Cardiff and District Branch, with the speakers from Veterans for Peace UK and Fellowship of Reconciliation in Wales. 

16th-20th November: Aseistakieltäytyjäliitto AKL from Finland circulates anti-recruitment material in front of the military recruitment offices in Helsinki/Finland.

17th November: AK Nahost, Bremer Friedensforum, Bremer Informationszentrum für Menschenrechte und Entwicklung (biz), Deutsch-Palästinensische Gesellschaft Bremen e.V., Nahost-Forum Bremen organise a talk with COs from Israel in Bremen/Germany.

17th November: Youth Activists Youth Allies (YA-YA) Network from the USA organises a workshop on anti-recruitment for the young in New York/USA

17th-18th November: Peace Action Wellington from New Zealand organises two days of actions against the Weapons Conference in Wellington/New Zealand.

18th November: Women in Black (London) leads a vigil on youth militarisation, handing out leaflets to members of the public in central London.

19th November: German Peace Society - United War Resisters' (DFG-VK) Mainz organises a rally against the Militarisation of Youth with information stall and live music with Strohfeuer Express.

20th November: War Resisters' League takes small street actions and distributes counter-recruitment resources in the streets around City College of New York (Harlem/New York), which -along with CUNY schools citywide- actively takes part in the Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) program.

20th November: Beyond the Fence- a Radio Show in the Pacific island of Guam, dedicates its episode on 20th November to the week of action against the militarisation of youth and discusses issues around countering youth militarisation in Guam

20th November Joves d'Esquerra Verda, a green youth group in Catalonia, organises a nonviolent street action in front of the government offices in Barcelona. 

20th-21st November: A group of activists organises a protest against the military recruitment at the job fair azubi-und-studientage in Frankfurt/M / Germany.

20th-22nd November: School of the Americas Watch holds three days of nonviolent actions and events, Resist Empire and Militarization, at the gates of the Fort Benning, a military base in Georgia, USA.

In Barcelona there will be symbolic street actions, and the Catalan group Desmilitaritzem l’Educació are twitter storming using #YouthAgainstWar

ForcesWatch (based in the UK) will publicise a report on peace education in the UK

Students from the University of York (UK) will do information stalls in their campuses.

The National Centre for Peace and Conflict Studies at the University of Otago (New Zealand) supports the week via their social media campaigning . A Phd student from the Centre publishes a blog on the youth resistance against the US militarism in the Pacific islands of the Marianas.

Activists in Sweden will hold public meetings focusing on the racial dynamics of youth militarisation for minorities in Sweden.

Aseistakieltäytyjäliitto AKL from Finland undertakes a social media campaigning on youth militarisation in Finland.
