Socorro Peace Vigil in New Mexico has been active in countering militarism with their weekly vigil against current U.S. wars (which in October commemorated their 8 year anniversary). Socorro Peace Vigil has also been doing counter-recruitment work in local classrooms and at the school board level, working with the local chapter of Iraq Veterans Against the War. Recently, Socorro Peace Vigil has taken the lead in opposition to a local university, New Mexico Tech, creating a drop zone (an area for the Air Force to practice dropping pallets and parachutists) close to town as a prelude to creating an air-to-ground gunnery range.
