Peter Schumann

Peter Schumann, founder of Bread and Puppet Theater in 1963 in New York City’s Lower East Side, engages key historical events and political issues throughout his many artist mediums and invites the audience to partake in the artistic experience. Bread and Puppet gets its name from Schumann’s own upbringing baking bread with his mother. Particularly dark bread, Schumann says is sustenance and, when possible, bakes bread at shows to share with the audience. Peter and his key collaborator, partner Elka create art speaks to the role of the artist in society. Through providing access to art and theater to younger audiences and drawing audience participation, the Schumanns help define the meaning of 'community art.' Almost 52 years later, Bread and Puppet remains a community fixture and continues to explore the human condition, with hopes that we understand ourselves and each other a little more.
