When Black Life Matters: One Month, One Year

Black Lives Matter on Statue

For The Long Struggle Ahead...

One month since Charleston massacre; One year since Eric Garner’s murder

In the summer of 2014, we witnessed the spread of a beautiful movement against increased militarism and white supremacy. Inspired by the determination of people in Ferguson, MO to defend their community, their dignity, and their lives, countless thousands across the US seized that moment to take action. Swelling in the streets of their cities and towns, spontaneously blocking freeways and intersections in open rebellion, people collectively transformed their grief and rage into the kind of power that momentarily disrupts a status quo that steals the life of a Black person every 28 hours in the US. Now we are faced with the question of how to sustain and grow that power.

New Workshop! "Buy 10 Guns, Get 2 Tanks Free"

Buy 10 Guns, Get 2 Tanks Free

Want to stop police militarization in your community? We can’t build a movement without building consciousness. Our new participatory workshop Buy 10 Guns, Get 2 Tanks Free: A Workshop on Resisting Police Militarization is one such building tool. The workshop, co-created with the Ya-Ya Network, highlights the successful cross-community organizing initiated by Oakland, CA’s Stop Urban Shield Coalition.

We Pushed Urban Shield Out of Oakland, But the Struggle Continues!

Stop Urban Shield

On Friday, September 5th, hundreds of protesters gathered in front of the Marriott in Downtown Oakland, CA, to stand against Urban Shield and declare two major victories: Urban Shield will no longer be held at the Marriott and it will no longer take place anywhere in Oakland. Reclaiming the streets in celebration of our power, we made it loud and clear that we do not welcome militarization and policing of our communities.

"No violence, just justice." - Lesley McSpadden, mother of Michael Brown.

We are saddened and outraged over the murder of 18-year-old Michael Brown by Ferguson Police, this past Saturday, August 9th. We stand in solidarity with the work of community members to connect, resist police violence, and transform their grief into power.

Historic Protest Settlement from 2004 RNC: WRL Speaks

Ruth Benn of the WRL NYC Local

January 16th's historic settlement awarded to protesters at the 2004 Republican National Convention in New York City was the largest in U.S. history - and many a WRL'er was in the mix! At the press conference, Ed Hedemann of the WRL - NYC local said: "The government can place FBI agents behind every mailbox and cops behind every potted plant but we will not be intimidated by their efforts to crush dissent and muzzle opposition to its policies."
